Macau gaming concessionaire MGM China is trying to protect its market share by launching a new promotional campaign. According to Inside Asian Gaming, the casino operator is now allowing players to exchange loyalty points* for the hugely popular Labubu toys**.
Customers can claim the latest edition of the collectible series — Mini Labubu. A full set of these plush monsters sells in China for about $345, with sales launched on August 29.
Citigroup analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau described MGM’s move as “a cost-effective approach that should help the company at least defend, if not expand, its market share despite increasing competition from Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment.”
Citigroup also noted that MGM China appears to be the first casino operator to offer Mini Labubu toys in exchange for loyalty points.
In addition to the sought-after Pop Mart collectible, MGM China’s campaign also gives customers a chance to win a Rolex watch. However, bonus points cannot be used in this case — players must spend more than $600 on side bets (additional wagers placed alongside a main bet) to qualify for the premium prize.
* MGM Rewards loyalty points, which players earn by gambling, taking part in promotions, or spending at MGM China hotels and restaurants.
** A brand of collectible plush monster toys created by Hong Kong designer Kasing Lung.
