Markéta Vondroušová

Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová faced a barrage of nasty comments on her social media accounts from angry bettors after her defeat in the first round of the Beijing tournament.

Vondroušová was playing against Ukrainian rival Angelina Kalinina, and she seemed to have the upper hand in the first set, winning it 6-1. However, things went downhill for the Czech player in the second set, where she wasted several break points. She ended up losing the set 4-6, and her confidence took a hit. In the final set, she only won one game.

After this crushing loss, Vondroušová had to deal with a flood of hateful messages on her social media platforms.

Most of these messages were full of insults and threats, and it’s easy to guess that they came from gamblers who had bet on the match.

Vondroušová responded by posting a compilation of messages from furious bettors, highlighting the widespread issue of online trolling and its lack of consequences. Notably, many other tennis players, including Borna Coric, Arina Sobolenko, and Linda Nosková, have faced similar social media attacks in the past.

It’s worth noting that in 2020, Sportradar launched a service to fight back against online trolls who harass and threaten tennis players. This tool can identify the name and location of the owner of an anonymous social media account for possible reporting to law enforcement agencies. However, it’s clear that this solution has not completely solved the problem.
