French tennis veteran Gaël Monfils, 38, has fired back at angry gamblers who targeted him with online abuse following his first-round loss at the ATP event in Stuttgart.
Monfils fell in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 3-6) to 20-year-old American Alex Michelsen.
The upset didn’t sit well with a wave of frustrated sports bettors, who flooded Monfils’ social media accounts with a barrage of insults and threats. The messages included everything from death wishes and racial slurs to violent threats — all from users blaming him for their losing wagers.
Monfils didn’t stay silent. Instead, he responded with a video on social media, mocking the bettors who lost money backing him. A portion of his message read:
“Hey guys! This is not financial advice. But really?! You still betting on me? First tournament on grass. I’m playing Alex Michelsen. 25 years old, 35 in the world… and you wanna bet on me? You’re writing that I’m shit. I know I’m shit! We both know I’m shit! And you still bet on me? Who’s the dumbest between you and me?”
Gambling Park notes: Recently, at the men’s Masters tournament in Rome, organizers began ejecting aggressive spectators from the stands for disrupting matches after losing wagers.
