OddsTrader has released results from its AI model Turbo, which it says delivered more accurate forecasts than traditional handicappers and sports analysts.
According to the company, during the first four weeks of the NFL season Turbo achieved a 52.5% success rate on spread bets.*
In the NBA, OddsTrader reported that Turbo’s accuracy reached 73.43% in cases where the system issued its highest-confidence predictions — essentially when the model “believed” the outcome was highly likely.

Not the First Case
Turbo is just the latest example of AI outperforming human experts:
- UK-based startup ManticAI beat analysts in an international forecasting competition.
- Studies on arXiv have shown machine learning models predicting English Premier League matches with greater consistency than some professional tipsters.
- In a related field, the AI bot Pluribus (developed by Facebook AI and CMU) defeated professional players in multiplayer poker back in 2019.
Skepticism and Caveats
- The numbers are self-reported by OddsTrader, with no independent audit.
- Results may reflect selective reporting of the most successful forecasts.
- The model’s long-term stability — especially accounting for bookmaker margins — remains unclear.
OddsTrader’s Turbo is less a breakthrough and more another reminder that AI can outperform handicappers. But independent verification and long-term performance will be key before drawing firm conclusions.
* Spread bets involve wagering on outcomes adjusted for point handicaps. For example, a “-3.5” line means the favorite must win by at least 4 points for the bet to succeed.
