Mississippi authorities may require casinos to withhold unpaid child support from large gambling winnings. The legislation has already been approved by both chambers of the state legislature, WMC-TV reported.
The measure comprises House Bill 520 and Senate Bill 2369. Under the proposals, casinos would be required to check winners against a database of child support debtors maintained by the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
If a payout exceeds $2,000 and the player has outstanding child support obligations, the casino must withhold the amount owed and transfer it toward the debt, remitting the remaining balance to the winner.
The bills do not establish any additional payout thresholds.
The rules would apply to slot machine winnings and sports betting payouts. Table games, including craps, poker and blackjack, would be exempt.
The initiative has prompted debate among lawmakers. Democratic Representative John Hines raised concerns about data privacy. Supporters of the legislation responded that casinos would receive only the names of debtors, without access to Social Security numbers or financial information.
Republican Senator Walter Michel said the measure would help direct funds toward supporting children.
Gambling Park notes that, if signed by the governor, the law would take effect on July 1, 2026.
