According to the New York Post, Hard Rock International is facing difficulties in the process of applying for a casino license in New York due to its business ties with Russia.
Last year, Governor of New York State Kathy Hochul issued a directive prohibiting any government agency from entering into contracts with companies doing business in Russia.
Until recently, Hard Rock International had two franchised restaurants in Russia, one in Moscow and one in St. Petersburg. The Moscow establishment under the Hard Rock brand closed several months ago, and the St. Petersburg location will close on March 13 of this year.
Sources familiar with the matter told the New York Post that this issue is currently preventing Hard Rock International from publicly announcing its intention to open a casino in New York.
Nevertheless, Hard Rock International will soon completely divest from business in Russia. Accordingly, the company sees no obstacles in the future when applying for a license to operate a casino in New York.
It’s worth noting that in early 2023, New York authorities announced their intention to grant permission to open three land-based casinos. The license fee will be no less than $500 million, and potential licensees will pay a $1 million application fee. Gambling companies Caesars Entertainment and Bally’s are contenders for the license, with projects actively supported by rapper Jay-Z and former U.S. President Donald Trump, respectively.
