Indonesia has passed a new law that allows authorities to freeze the bank accounts of people who gamble online. The country has a strict ban on all forms of gambling, which can land violators in jail for up to 10 years.
The new rules have been approved by both the government and the House of Representatives, and will be officially enacted in the next plenary session. They will amend Article 40 of the Law on Information and Electronic Transactions, which deals with blocking websites that contain illegal content, such as gambling and pornography, and regulating internet content.
The Minister of Communications and Informatics said that from July to October 2023, his ministry had blocked about 393,000 websites that offered online gambling services.
He added, “The existing law has no regulation about this issue, but the proposed bill allows authorities to immediately freeze bank accounts”.
