The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has announced the bans of seven Belgian tennis players for match-fixing.
The players have been sidelined for a period ranging from 2 years and 7 months to 4 years and 10 months. The list includes Arthur De Greef, Romain Barbosa, Alec Witmeur, Arnaud Graisse, Julien Dubail, Maxime Authom, and Omar Salman.
On top of the bans, the players have also been hit with fines ranging from $30,000 to $45,000.
It’s worth noting that all these players were caught up in a big investigation in Belgium into a criminal ring that rigged matches. The mastermind of this ring was Grigor Sargsyan, an Armenian who recently got a five-year jail sentence.
As for the disqualified Belgian players, they are barred from playing, coaching, and attending any tennis events sanctioned by the sport’s authorities during their bans. It’s important to note that some of these players were already sidelined during the investigation in 2021. For example, Alec Witmeur, who got a 2 year and 7 month ban, will be able to return to the court in December of this year.
