A 33-year-old man in the United States has been charged with casino cheating, The Spokesman-Review reported. Police allege he used a vibrating device to manipulate gaming machines.
The suspect, Jeremiah Villegas of Washington state, faces charges of cheating and trespassing. The latter stems from his presence at Northern Quest Resort & Casino despite a 99-year ban from the property.
According to court documents, Villegas allegedly used vibrations to manipulate coin pusher machines. These devices involve dropping coins onto a moving platform that gradually pushes existing coins toward the edge. When coins fall into a tray, the player receives a payout and, in some cases, triggers bonus features.
Investigators said Villegas inserted money into the machines before standing close to them and pressing against the side of the cabinet with his hands in his hoodie pockets. Authorities believe a vibrating device in his pockets transmitted vibrations to the machine.
Surveillance footage also shows him kicking the machines while playing. This allegedly caused coins to shift more rapidly and fall into the tray, enabling payouts and activating bonus features.
If convicted, Villegas could face up to one year in prison. A court hearing is scheduled for May.
The outlet noted that a similar scheme was uncovered at the same casino several years earlier, when a 51-year-old man was arrested for using a massage gun to manipulate gaming machines.
Earlier, Gambling Park reported that casino operator Caesars is facing a class-action lawsuit over an alleged data breach.
