Malta’s Labour Party has pledged to expand support for the iGaming sector if it wins the May 30 parliamentary election. Prime Minister and Labour leader Robert Abela announced the package, SiGMA reported.
Abela said a re-elected Labour government would support the creation of more than 1,300 jobs in iGaming and esports. The sector currently employs about 14,000 people in Malta. He said the measures were aimed at strengthening the country’s position as one of Europe’s online gambling hubs.
Over the next two years, Labour plans to allocate €60 million to iGaming and esports initiatives. One of the proposed projects is a new esports centre that would host tournaments and support local players.
The package also includes measures aimed at easing business registration and management. Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said the government plans legislative changes that would allow foreign entrepreneurs to register and manage companies in Malta fully online, without having to travel to the country.
The proposals also cover prediction markets. Labour plans to give the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) the power to license prediction market operators. Details of the potential regulatory framework have not yet been disclosed. Prediction markets are often viewed as gambling-adjacent because users place bets or trade contracts linked to the outcomes of real-world events.
