Ireland is considering a ban on gambling ads during daytime hours, as part of an amendment to the existing gambling regulation law. The proposal has cleared the first hurdle in the national parliament of Ireland.
The ban would apply to gambling ads on TV, radio, and online media from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM.
The aim is to shield children from the constant exposure to gambling ads on various media platforms.
The Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA) is not happy with the plan, and has reached out to the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee. The bookmakers warn that the ban could disrupt live sports broadcasts that feature betting ads.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s Labour Party is pushing for a total ban on gambling ads, citing concerns about the harm of gambling and the link between sports and betting. Senator Mark Wall argues that the government’s proposed restrictions are not enough, as gambling addiction knows no time limits.
