Indonesia’s National Police, in tandem with the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), has announced the shutdown of more than 10,000 websites linked to online gambling.

“In cooperation with the Kominfo Ministry, we have blocked 10,056 online gambling sites”, said National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

The authorities have also frozen over 1,000 bank accounts connected to illegal gambling activities.

This is not the first time that Indonesia has clamped down on online gambling. In the last 5 years, the country has blocked over 800,000 pieces of content related to gambling.

Indonesia bans gambling for religious reasons, and anyone caught playing online or offline casino games can face up to 4 years in jail.
