A study conducted by the private Swedish television company Sveriges Television AB (SVT) has shed light on a concerning trend: 8 out of 10 Swedish influencers are actively promoting illegal online casinos on their Twitch streams and profiles.
The study, spanning 6 weeks, was carried out by the Kulturnyheterna group, an arm of SVT. Their focus? Monitoring the streams of the nation’s most prominent influencers on the Twitch platform.
The findings are stark: 80% of these influencers were caught promoting games at online casinos not licensed in Sweden to their followers. Some (60%) did so by directly linking to illicit gambling resources or discussing enticing bonus offers.
The total subscriber count for these observed influencers stands at a staggering 500,000 people, with the majority being young individuals and teenagers.
The data collected by Kulturnyheterna has been swiftly relayed to the national gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen. While the regulator has yet to provide detailed commentary on the study’s results, they’ve issued a stern warning: advertising illegal gambling could lead to severe consequences, including being barred from conducting business and police intervention.
